This year’s ceremony was a celebration of undeniable talent across the board. Anyone familiar with the VMAs will know to expect scandal, controversy, and killer performances — and this year did not disappoint. Sure, it was no Britney dancing with a snake wrapped around her neck or Kanye storming the stage during Taylor Swift’s speech, but it’ll do. Here are our top moments from the evening.

sombr’s tribute to George Michael

At just 21, sombr has proven his vocal abilities with a flawless performance of George Michael’s ‘Father Figure’. Whilst there were multiple artists chosen for the tribute, sombr’s performance really defied all audience expectations. No matter your opinion of him, you cannot deny that he smashed it. I think this song was so perfect for him because it’s taken on an entirely new lease of life following A24’s Babygirl, which features a scene of heartthrob Harris Dickinson dancing to the George Michael track whilst smoking a cigarette. Gen Z love George Michael, and who is more Gen Z than sombr?

The night Sienna Spiro became a superstar

This year’s ceremony was a celebration of young talent, for sure. Sienna Spiro won her first major award for Best New Artist at just 21 years old, which was inevitable given the success of her album ‘Visitor’. After hearing her performance of ‘Great Expectation’, how could you not love her? It’s refreshing to see such gratifying awards being handed to talent like Sienna. The star even received a hug from Snoop Dogg after her big win, as well as a passing ‘well done’ from Taylor Swift.

Yung Lean and GENER8ION’s performance of STORM

Anyone familiar with Yung Lean was probably shocked to hear of the artist’s presence at the VMAs. After gathering a cult fanbase over ten years ago, it was inevitable for him to receive this level of mainstream recognition at some point, despite his work being more of an acquired taste. Yung Lean and GENER8ION’s performance of ‘STORM’ was one of the most immaculately choreographed performances we have seen in years. It’s important to note that whilst this is a Yung Lean performance, the dancers are the real stars of the show. Damien Jalet is the mastermind behind the choreography, and we must continue to say his name. This was the ultimate way to end the night.
